Network Wiring: Not one of the Fastest Growing Occupations? Chao Closer to Left Field than Home Plate! To quote one of my favorite childhood superheroes, “Riddle me this, Batman, how can the premise, or inside plant, communications wiring not be one of the Fastest Growing Occupations?”

On October 8, 2003, Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced the Career Voyages website as a collaboration between the Departments of Labor and Education.  Since I work for a company that develops career-training programs for secondary and post-secondary students, I was excited to read the secretary’s comments:

"Career Voyages helps young people learn about the high growth industries where many opportunities await them…"

Without detailing the entire list, #1 is “Computer Support Specialists,” and “Telecommunications Line Installers and Repairers” is #12.

Okay, so I’m getting a little excited because my company develops programs that teach the basics behind network wiring and cabling as well as voice communications networks.  But, as I read further, I am dismayed.  “Entry-level line installers may be hired as ground workers, helpers, or tree trimmers, who clear branches from telephone and power lines. These workers may advance to positions stringing cable and performing service installations.”  What about the need for technicians to install the cabling within the building?  To read entire article, click here.

Network Cabling, the Orphaned Child: On June 18-20, my company was fortunate to showcase, in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, at the CeBIT America conference in NYC.  I had the pleasure of speaking with a number of attendees who attested to the fact that network cabling is the orphaned child of the IT family.

I chatted with a longtime technician who told me about an advisory board meeting he attended at a local vocational-technical school that was introducing its new IT curriculum.  When he asked how they were going to teach cabling, the response was, “Our kids don’t need to know that; it’s not important.”  He walked out of the meeting.

I have been Director of Marketing for C-Tech, a company that manufactures and develops training aids and curriculum in network cabling, for the past 8 years.  The story shared above is quite commonplace.

I could go on, but the fact of the matter is this:  it doesn’t matter how much money you spend on computers, networking equipment and software.  If the cabling connecting everything together is installed poorly, you are in big trouble. To read entire article, click here.

“The future of technology education within our nation’s schools is constantly coming under scrutiny,” comments, C-Tech’s Director of Programs and Training.  “The New York City Department of Education’s classroom at CeBIT America is an outstanding example of excellence in technology education.  The schools being featured have been proactive in identifying high-growth careers and programs to address the growing need for trained technicians.”     RETURN TO TOP

C-Tech signs PPR agreement with National Telecom Alliance.  "The members of NTA are committed to providing their customers with the most outstanding service available in the marketplace today. The key to delivering outstanding service is to have a pool of well-trained and motivated field personnel. We feel NTA's participation in the C-Tech program will provide our member companies, representing over $700 million in annualized revenue, a steady source of this hard to find resource."

"It is the goal of NTA to provide its members competitive advantages in their marketplace. Trained, motivated manpower is always a need of every telecommunication's contractor and C-Tech helps provide that manpower. With fewer and fewer young people entering the labor pool, it is important to have an edge in capturing some of that limited resource. Helping our members build relationships with C-Tech Certified Training Facilities in their local market will help them today and for many years to come. And it will help the schools recruit students into their programs, when they see the opportunities for employment with companies the quality of the NTA members."

C-Tech has been named to Deloitte & Touche's prestigious "Fast 50" Program for New Jersey, a ranking of the 50 fastest growing technology companies in the area.  Rankings are based on the percentage of growth in revenues from 1995-1999 (five-year period).

"We're in the business of creating a new skilled-labor pool for the telecommunications sector of the technology world," stated CEO William Brady.   C-Tech is not only addressing the industry's critical need for skilled workers, it is also changing people's lives by giving them a chance to enter the workforce.

"In an era where technology companies come and go like shooting stars, making the Deloitte & Touche 'Fast 50' is a testament to a company's leadership and its ability to not only have the right solution for that moment in time, but also the vision that allows growth over five years," said Richard Kabobjian, Managing Partner, Assurance and Advisory Services at Deloitte & Touche.  "C-Tech has proven that they have the right stuff to success, and we at Deloitte & Touche salute its accomplishments."

C-Tech's increase in revenues of 1,810% over the five-year period of 1995 to 1999 resulted in a 8 ranking overall in the Fast 50 for New Jersey.  Last year, C-Tech was ranked 18th.

Winners of the 21 regional Fast 50 programs in the United States are automatically entered in the Deloitte & Touche Technology Fast 500, which ranks the nation's top 500 fastest-growing technology companies.
